Tesco crossing campaign – what’s your view?

by Ian Yuill on 26 April, 2016

Along with many local residents, I believe a pedestrian crossing is needed on the main road near the Mannofield branch of Tesco.

People tell me they find it difficult to cross the road and often feel unsafe when doing so.

I’m very keen to hear the views of as many people as possible on this issue and it would be a huge help if you could complete my online survey.

  1. AF MacDonald says:

This is really an accident waiting to happen, especially as Aberdeen drivers, by and large, give no leeway to the elderly.

  2. Jacqui Armstrong says:

I would welcome some type of pedestrian crossing at the Tesco/ Circles etc site. I’m fit & healthy & can sprint across whenever there’s a space in the traffic – a dangerous practice! Parent’s with wee ones should not have to face this risk nor should the elderly & infirm.

  3. Ian Armstrong says:

Agree pedestrian crossing near Mannofield Tesco is required.

Separate issue but the other Mannofield (Co-op etc) shop development is looking very unloved. Some pressure on owners for repainting and removal of vegetation would be welcome.

I don’t think a pedestrian crossing at Tesco is practical I am a driver and find it diffical enough coming out of Morningside Road bad enough without trying to navigate a traffic island.Perhaps a crossing further down the road might be better

  5. Kathleen McPherson says:

I think a crossing would be very good as motorists use St John’s Terrace as a race track. The speed limit is 30 mph but because it is a long straight stretch they speed all the time there.

  6. Rosemary PATERSON says:

I do think that a crossing is badly needed at this part of the very busy road that goes out west from Aberdeen.

I occasionally shop at the Tesco shop and visit the tea room at Circles and find that it is very difficult to cross the road safely as traffic comes up also from housing further down the Broomhill area of Aberdeen – this road past the Cricket Club is a busy cut through for traffic turning left onto Deeside Road.

  7. Margaret Stone says:

there really should be a pedestrian crossing to make it easier to cross the road for Tesco but also for the Circles Cafe which is used by many OAPs and mothers with young children.

  8. Linda Taylor says:

We most certainly need a crossing. This is an area with a fairly large elderly community. Sometime crossing the road when you are elderly takes longer than the younger, fitter residents. That fact should surely make it a Health & Safety issue. Traffic comes racing down that straight from the Cults direction and also round the bed heading westbound and pedestrians have nowhere to go except as fast as they can make it to the other side or hover in the middle of the road while traffic passes them in both directions. If they can put a traffic island in at the bus stop at the shops at Seafield, then surely Great Western Road/Oakdale Terrace is a busier thoroughfare and deserves one in an attempt to keep pedestrians safer.

  9. John MacCallum says:

Can’t seem to get access to the survey site – would have said no anyway as that is a challenging enough junction as it is in a car with the entrance to Morningside Road just next to it. There is a traffic island about 30 yards down the road so why would you need a crossing there for a small “corner shop” Tesco that is not overly busy. How about the potholes on Morningside Road or the RGU parking up there?

  10. ian mitchell says:

even if it is just a small island in the middle of the road it would be more manageable
it is difficult to get across the road especially at rush hour

  11. BF says:

I agree, although, given the roads layout, I suspect it will only be possible to install a crossing either on Gt Western Road east of Morningside Road or on St John’s Terrace west of Gordon Terrace and, the further away from Morningside Road/Tesco it is, the less likely it will be used by pedestrians.

  12. Isobel McWilliam says:

Yes, a crosssing is needed at Tesco. Waiting for two traffic streams to have a gap is very frustrating on this bleak exposed bend. Then, when it does occur, a couple of cars shoo out from Morningside road to travel. east. Thus, waiting prolonged.

  13. D. Farquhar says:

Very difficult situation with roads using very heavy traffic. In my humble opinion the crossing is necessary to help persons of all ages.

  14. Eleanor Davidson says:

I wonder if the existing island crossing could be moved nearer to Tesco but not so near that it affects traffic flow from Morningside Road travelling east on to Great Western Road

  15. Simon D says:

Regardless of the minority drivers finding the junction difficult enough to navigate, this should not be put before pedestrian safety. A crossing is urgently required to prevent an accident.
