Investment needed in pavement repairs

by Ian Yuill on 5 June, 2016

Photo of uneven paving stonesI frequently get contacted by residents about the state of pavements in our area. Many are uneven, badly broken and can all to easily trip people.

Whenever I am contacted about problems with a pavement, I always highlight the issues to the council’s roads staff. This can lead to the pavement being repaired although in some cases the roads staff take no action because the broken or uneven area is not “bad enough”.

Whilst getting repairs made like this does make a difference it is not a long-term solution. The long-term solution is for the council to invest more in properly resurfacing and repairing pavements across Aberdeen. Sadly, on each of the occasions over the last four years when my Liberal Democrat colleagues and I have proposed – as part of balanced budgets – investing more in pavement and road resurfacing and repairs, Labour, Conservative and SNP councillors have refused to back that.

Until the council does invest more in this the condition of pavements across Aberdeen will continue to get worse.
