Newlands Crescent street name confusion set to continue

I am annoyed at the decision made by Aberdeen City Council on 14th December to abandon the proposal to rename the road named “Newlands Crescent” in Cove Bay. Renaming the road in Cove Bay would have ended the confusion between the long-established Newlands Crescent off Broomhill Road and the new road in Cove Bay.

This confusion – caused by the council – has led to a great deal of inconvenience and annoyance for residents. Residents and I and I have been urging the council for over two years to take action to solve this problem by renaming the road in Cove Bay.

Unfortunately, on 14th December the council voted by 36 votes to 5 to abandon the renaming of the road in Cove Bay.

I am angry at this decision. Council staff have been consulting residents on the proposal to rename the road in Cove Bay. Incredibly, the Labour, SNP and Conservative councillors refused to even look at the results of that consultation before making a decision.

Sadly, amongst those voting not to change the name of the road in Cove Bay were the Labour and SNP councillors for this area.

Only the Liberal Democrat members of the council backed my call that councillors look at the responses from residents to the consultation before then making a decision.

The street name confusion is a problem caused by the council. The council should have acted to end that confusion. Instead, Labour, SNP and Conservative councillors voted to condemn residents to future ongoing problems and difficulties.
