NEWS RELEASE : SNP under fire for playing political games with Countesswells schools rezoning

by Ian Yuill on 24 March, 2016

Liberal Democrat councillor for Airyhall, Braeside and Mannofield Ian Yuill today (24th March) condemned SNP councillors on Aberdeen City Council’s Education and Children’s Services Committee for playing political games and creating uncertainty over proposals for school rezoning caused by the construction of 3,000 new houses at Countesswells.

Ian Yuill said “After a wide consultation and a great deal of work, council education professionals prepared modified rezoning proposals which both answered the concerns of Airyhall School parents and were fair to the future residents of Countesswells. Despite that, at today’s Education Committee meeting, SNP councillors started playing political games and, frankly, scaremongering over the education of the children who will live in the new Countesswells development.

“The SNP’s behaviour was shameful. Their use of the word ‘segregated’ to describe the education of Countesswells children was a disgrace.

“Everyone accepts the former Braeside School needs to be refurbished before it can be used as a temporary home for the new Countesswells School. The SNP’s attempt today to try to cause alarm about its current condition was nothing less than scaremongering.”
