Labour, Conservative and SNP councillors unite to end right of children from Deeside Gardens to attend Airyhall School

Photo of Airyhall SchoolI am very disappointed that Labour, Conservative and SNP councillors united at the city council’s Education and Children’s Services Committee meeting on Thursday 17th November to end the right of children from the Deeside Gardens area to attend Airyhall School. They voted to end the “dual zone” arrangement where children from the Deeside Gardens area could attend either Airyhall or Broomhill Schools.

Whilst existing pupils and their brothers and sisters will still be able to attend Airyhall School, from August 2017 other children from the Deeside Gardens area will be zoned to attend Broomhill School.

Only the Liberal Democrat members of the Education and Children’s Services Committee, including me, opposed the move.

I believe that this change is unjustified as Broomhill School is further away from the Deeside Gardens area – and Airyhall School has the capacity to accommodate children from the Deeside Gardens area.

You can read the committee report about this here.

“Airyhall School has the capacity to accommodate children from the Deeside Gardens area”. One of your main oppositions to the housing developments at Coutesswells if I remember rightly was that Airyhall Primary was running at capacity and would be unable to accommodate more children. I appreciate that the numbers in question are far less in this situation but possibly a more rounded argument might have helped your case.

I checked with the council’s education staff before proposing that the current primary school dual zone arrangement continue. I was told that Airyhall School could accommodate children from the Deeside Gardens area for the foreseeable future.

There is also a big difference in the impact on local infrastructure between building 3,000 new homes at Countesswells and allowing the dual zone status quo to continue for the Deeside Gardens area.
