Control room mix up sends police to Glasgow, not Mannofield!

by Ian Yuill on 11 April, 2017

Photo of Tesco, MannofieldA mix up at Police Scotland’s new centralised control room led to police officers being sent to a Tesco store in Glasgow, rather than Tesco in Mannofield.

The error happened after staff at Mannofield’s Tesco store reported an attempted break in. The police control room sent police officers to Great Western Road in Glasgow when they should have been sent to Great Western Road in Aberdeen.

This is hugely worrying. When the centralisation of police control rooms – and the closure of our local control room in Aberdeen – was proposed Liberal Democrats in Aberdeen and in the Scottish Parliament pointed out the risks of things like this happening when local knowledge was lost. We were told that would not be the case.

Sadly its clear that we were right. Fortunately in this case it was not an urgent ongoing crime but imagine what could have happened if someone had phoned the police to report an ongoing assault in the car park outside Tesco in Mannofield and the police had been sent to a Glasgow Tesco by mistake.

The SNP’s centralisation of Scotland’s police forces was not needed and is directly responsible for problems like this.

No system is perfect accept that this case looks like poor description of the location Suggest there may be a need for a call back procedure to clarify out local issues

    • Ian Yuill says:

You are right that no system is perfect but staff in the former Aberdeen control room would not have made this mistake.

The loss of local control rooms has also led to a loss of local knowledge.

It is very worrying how the SNP are more interested in yet another referendum rather than doing their primary role of Governing this country.
It does not take too much intelligence to realise that a non-local control room has potential for mistakes such as the Manofield Tesco debacle and yet quote “this will not happen” God help us.
Come on SNP start governing and forget the referendum. Few of us want it.
