Wheelie bin profusion

by Ian Yuill on 1 May, 2017

Photo of wheelie bins on a pavementWhilst, after a few initial problems, the new arrangements for collecting waste and material for recycling from people’s homes is now mostly working well, I have had several complaints from people about the very large number of wheelie bins now sitting on some streets. This is a particular problem on roads with tenements or blocks of flats.

One resident described their street as “bin alley”.

The answer in some areas might be to replace wheelie bins with bulk street bins, but not everybody likes these and they also mean parking spaces are lost from what are often heavily parked roads.

What do you think?

I live on garthdee road and there are more wheelie bins left on the pavement than ever this past year. Once one person does it then everybody else seems to.

I agree that something will need to be done about these bins.
I recognise the street shown and even before the extra bins were distributed there was a problem with bins never been taken in from the street.
On this same street very few of the gardens are attended to so there would be space for communal bins there.
There is already a parking problem in this area.

As I understand it the bins have to be put out before 7am. Rightly or wrongly this causes people to put them out the night before. I have not monitored this but my impression is that the bin men do not come round until much later. Of course putting back the time might encourage people to put the bins out on the relevant morning thus avoiding the overnight rows of bins but a lot of bins would still be there throughout the relevant day until people get home from work. I can not see a way around this.I would not like to see street bins.

You could barely walk down Holburn Road without falling over bins, and that was before the new ones. There’s no excuse really, every property in this street has a back garden where they could, and should, be kept, (most of the properties also have space in front gardens), the Council should be insisting that they’re moved. Also, any time the wind picks up, they also end up taking off and damaging cars.

    Congratulations on your re-election.

The only problems I have had with bins in our street is that once emptied, they are sometimes put back either partially or completely blocking access to the driveway, which is not a major problem but is more of an annoyance.
