Council says Garthdee grass cutting update – areas to be left uncut

by Ian Yuill on 17 July, 2019

Council staff have told me that the areas of grass around Garthdee which have been left uncut this year will not be cut in future and will be left as “natural areas”.

The council’s Operations and Protective Services service told me “Grassed area like the ones mentioned are now to be left as natural areas and therefore the grass will no longer be cut”.

The reduction in grass cutting is the result of a substantial cut to the council’s grass cutting budget made by the coalition of Conservative, “Aberdeen Labour” and Independent councillors which controls the council. My Liberal Democrat colleagues and I did not support their cut to the grass cutting budget.

I have arranged meet the senior council manager responsible for grass cutting and will be raising with him how the areas to be left uncut were chosen.

They look untidy and make the area look scruffy. It also leaves the grass area unusable for locals.

It’s just an easy excuse to save money and make it seem that they are doing something for the environment by using buzz words.

Just need to look at the area over next to the shell path to see what it will end up looking like, minus the trees.

All fair and well spending on updating certain areas around the city but I have a small child and what happens when some low life or junkie throws broken glass into it or worse used needles, animals and children will be harmed by this careless neglect from the councils. Provide the community centres with a ride on mower, guarantee there will be ample volunteers to keep their community safe clean and tidy. Bloody disgrace!

    • Hello Garthdee resident,
I agree with you, this isn’t acceptable for our community and it is neglect by the council.
As far as ride on mowers for the community centre- no thanks, my staff, volunteers or committee have more than enough on their plate without giving up even more of their time to do the basics of what our taxes should cover.
The city councillors who have made this decision, along with other destructive policies, will be reminded soon enough when the people come to vote.

    Garthdee braes a disgrace
Anderson Drive verges an absolute disgrace.
How much money has the Council pumped in to the new Exhibition Centre to attract more visitors etc to Aberdeen – but what impression do they leave with ??-

    I completely agree with “Claire”
The council are jumping on the “wildflower area” band wagon as an excuse for not cutting grass and other issues due to ill thought out budget cuts. This is city is beginning to look a disgrace. We spend money to attract tourism but forget about the basic appearance of our city.

Aberdeen Council are a disgrace. They bought a new car for the Lord Provost
Costing £150,000. We pay our council tax for services for cutting grass emptying our bins. Now on top of that we have to pay an extra £30 for emptying our garden waste. I was walking along the railway line and the amount of overgrown NETTLES COMING ON TO THE PATH. NO PARENT WANTS THEIR CHILD TO BE STUNG BY NETTLES. It looks a very untidy path. Also the long grass on the slopes at the Beach looks awful untidy litter thrown into it. Bottles. Health hazard if there is broken glass. Why don’t the council cut all the grass and make compost and then sell it to the public making money. Cant wait for the local elections and vote the Torry and Labour out. Get in Liberals. Obviously these councillors don’t care how Aberdeen looks. It used to be a beautiful clean City. NOW ITS DIRTY. NO CITY IN BLOOM WIN.
THEY ARE A DISGRACE. CUT THESE COUNCILLORS EXPENSES AND NO PAY RISE FOR THEM INSTEAD CUTTING PUBLIC SERVICES. THEY FORGET THAT IT IS US THAT VOTE THEM IN GIVING THEM THEIR JOBS. MIND YOU THEY DIDNT LISTEN TO US ABOUT UNION TERRACE GARDENS OR MARISCHAL SQUARE. SO AGAIN THEY SHOULD GET THE SACK FOR NOT DOING WHAT THEIR BOSSES TELL THEM TO DO. US THE PEOPLE.
