Aberdeen’s Liberal Democrat councillors have today called on Councillor Alan Donnelly to resign immediately following his conviction for sexual assault at Aberdeen Sheriff Court on 13th December.
Liberal Democrat Group Leader Ian Yuill said: “Alan Donnelly’s conviction for sexual assault makes his continued membership of Aberdeen City Council completely inappropriate and unacceptable. We have called on him to resign as a councillor immediately.”
Councillor Yuill added: “The Liberal Democrats have also urged the other political groups on the council to join us in calling on Councillor Donnelly to resign.”
Councillor Yuill confirmed that he has also reported Councillor Donnelly to the Commissioner for Ethical Standards in Public Life in Scotland.

Ian Yuill’s email to Alan Donnelly states:
Dear Councillor Donnelly
The Aberdeen City Council Liberal Democrat Group believe your conviction for sexual assault earlier today makes it completely inappropriate and unacceptable for you to continue to hold office as a member of Aberdeen City Council.
We therefore call on you to resign immediately as a member of Aberdeen City Council.
Yours sincerely
Ian Yuill
