NEWS RELEASE : Call for full audit of Union Terrace Gardens granite

by Ian Yuill on 16 June, 2021

Ian Yuill, Liberal Democrat Group Leader on Aberdeen City Council, has called for a full audit to find what has happened to all the granite that was present in Union Terrace Gardens at the start of the redevelopment of the Gardens.

This move came after the Council confirmed that granite Ian Yuill had seen in a private garden in Aberdeen had indeed come from Union Terrace Gardens.

Councillor Yuill said, “This confirms what was already obvious – that the granite in the private garden had come from Union Terrace Gardens. Alarmingly, only six days ago (Wednesday 9th June) a senior Council manager told me that Council staff had visited Union Terrace Gardens to confirm that the granite was being handled properly. Clearly that was not what was happening.

“I am very concerned that Council staff appear to have been misled about how the granite was being handled. I am also worried that more granite may have been removed. There are also the very alarming reports that some of the granite was taken to an Aberdeenshire quarry and crushed.”

Ian Yuill concluded, “Aberdeen’s granite heritage is unique. It must be protected. The alarming way in which granite from Union Terrace Gardens has been handled is an outrage. I have now contacted a senior Council manager and called for a full audit of all the Union Terrace Gardens granite. Aberdonians deserve to know where that granite is, what has been done with it and if any of it has indeed been crushed.”

bad enough habitat and healthy trees were destroyed; with the city having no idea where its assets are, and denying the problem was real, this becomes farce. Thanks Ian.

  2. Catherine says:

Couldn’t agree with Suzanne more. The whole project is a complete travesty and a very expensive one.

  3. Eric Kiltie says:

Good on you for looking into this Ian.

  4. John Burr says:

Presumably the council still have the granite pound at Harehill. This is where it should have gone.
