Aberdeen’s Liberal Democrat councillors today (6th February) proposed investing £300,000 of Common Good funds in enhancing Hazlehead Park and the area around it. Their moved came at the annual budget setting meeting of Aberdeen City Council.

The Liberal Democrats also proposed investing a home safety initiative and in refurbishing play parks across Aberdeen.

Liberal Democrat Group Leader Ian Yuill said “The multi-million pound project to bring Duthie Park back to its Victorian splendour has rightly been well received and we believe we should now turn our attention to Hazlehead – where the park and surrounding area is enjoyed by citizens from across Aberdeen.

“Clearly in our proposals today, we could not match the level of investment in Duthie Park, but that does not mean the council should not have made a start.

“If the council had backed our costed proposal £50,000 would have been invested in upgrading the Queen Mother Rose Garden at Hazlehead Park. This rose garden has been a wonderful attraction over the years and we believe it is right to invest now to ensure it continues to delight Aberdonians and visitors for years to come.”

The Liberal Democrats also proposed action to repair the crumbling private roads owned by the council around Hazlehead golf courses and the wooded areas.

Ian Yuill said “There private roads owned by the council are in a terrible condition and that is now putting people off visiting the wooded areas at Hazlehead. The one off investment of £250,000 we proposed would have gone a long way to tackling that problem.”

Turning to the Liberal Democrats proposed home safety initiative, Ian Yuill said “Investing £50,000 in this would have allowed the council to work with the Fire and Rescue Service and provide thousands of homes across Aberdeen with Carbon Monoxide detectors. This relatively modest amount of money would have made people across Aberdeen safer and quite possibly saved lives.”

The Liberal Democrats’ third proposal for investment by the Common Good Fund was to support upgrading play parks in communities across Aberdeen.

Commenting on this, Ian Yuill said “Many city play parks are in need to replacement or refurbishment. Although some improvements have been made investing an additional £125,000 in play parks would have made a real difference by helping to refurbish and improve play parks across Aberdeen.”
