Marks on trees on South Anderson Drive and Anderson Drive

by Ian Yuill on 31 August, 2016

I have been contacted by a number of people recently about the red and yellow marks that have appeared on some trees on South Anderson Drive and Anderson Drive.

I have now been told by Aberdeen’s City Council’s Arboricultural Officer that these marks do mean there will potentially be “some tree removals” after consultation but that “extensive replanting” will also take place.

Below is the reply I received from the council’s Arboricultural Officer about the marks on the trees:

Hello Councillor Yuill,

This relates to some improvements  for cycle ways  planned by our Roads colleagues adjacent to the road. I was consulted and saw this as an opportunity to look at some of the copper beech lining the route as some of them are badly cankered – at least 1 has already died (hence you will see on the wide grass verge opposite ASDA I started planting replacement redwoods some time ago).

This scheme will see some tree removals but also very extensive replanting-we are going to plant a Eucalyptus species.

However as always before any tree felling happens we will consult fully.

Replanting is correctly being implemented here, which is fine. It would be welcomed in other street tree pits as well. Too many dead trees around and would be better removed quickly than remain standing.

Thousands of trees are being group planted but a few diverted to the streets where needed would improve the immediate environment. It might be an idea also to remove unslightly ‘temporary’ tarmac covering some tree pits and reinstate trees.

Elsewhere new pits are introduced in footways, but maintenance of existing is essential.
