Firework displays – what are the rules?

by Ian Yuill on 25 June, 2019

I am regularly contacted by residents from across our area who are concerned about the noise and disturbance caused by fireworks displays at hotels, businesses and homes.

People tell me these fireworks displays can wake young children and upset pets.

Fireworks displays are regulated by the Firework (Scotland) Regulations 2004. It is the police’s responsibility to enforce these regulations.

The regulations prohibit the setting off of fireworks between 11pm and 7am – except on Hogmanay, Guy Fawkes night, Diwali and Chinese New Year. Different time restrictions apply on these four nights.

That means so long as a fireworks display finishes before 11pm or starts after 7am no regulation is being broken.

If fireworks are being set off after 11pm or before 7am you should report this to the police by calling 101.

You can find out more about these regulations and the law on using fireworks here.
