Cranford Road one way restriction update

by Ian Yuill on 13 August, 2022

Council staff have assured me that the one-way restriction which was recently reintroduced on Cranford Road between its junctions with Great Western Road and Hutchison Terrace will be removed within a few days.

The one-way restriction was put back in place because of a series of one day cricket internationals currently being played at Aberdeenshire Cricket Club.

I asked for confirmation of when the one-way restriction would be removed and was told this would be done after the final cricket international which takes place on Wednesday 17th August.

Wall issue must be resolved

Whilst the removal of the temporary one-way restriction will be welcome, there must be a permanent solution to the issue of the cricket ground wall which will allow the pavement to be permanently reopened.

The Council first put the barriers in place and closed the pavement beside the wall after a Council inspector judged the wall to be unsafe. The inspection was carried out after a resident contacted the Council concerned that the wall appeared to have moved.

An update I received recently from the Council’s Roads Operations Manager about this said:

“I have asked our structures team to continue engagement with the cricket club, however this is likely now to be in the form of serving notice for the wall to be made safe and detailing a clear timeline to which that needs to be met. To date, the cricket club have refused to provide us with their independent structural report.

“I can only apologise that there will now be further impact to the local community by way of restrictions to ensure safety for road users is maintained during the event, however please be assured we will work at pace to get a full resolution to the unsafe wall and the impact to the surrounding community.”

In the interest of openness I should say that I am a member of Aberdeenshire Cricket Club.

I understand the problem with the Wall on Cranford road but it’s a pity this road had to close to one way traffic during the International Cricket matches as living in Morningside it’s annoying trying to get up and down Morningside Road with all the cars parked there during these matches and thinking I would avoid the road and go along Cranford road instead I was furious to find that it was closed from our end . I’m sure this could have been avoided during these Vital Cricket matches

Yes, it’s very unfortunate. The solution though is for the Cricket Club to make its wall safe to the satisfaction of the council and it has not yet done so.

Disgraceful that between the council & the cricket club have procrastinated this long & the council blames the club for not providing a report & the pavement remains closed! How long does it take to agree the solution, typical penny pinching, get your act together sort it & move on!

The Council has a legal duty to keep people safe by closing roads / pavements if it believes a nearby structure like a building or wall is in an unsafe condition. That is why the Council took the action it did on Cranford Road. As you will be aware the Council recently took similar action at Great Western Road over an unsafe building.

The Cricket Club has sought its own professional advice and is disputing the Council’s position on the wall.

The Council can take action to force a building / wall owner to make it safe but it much prefers to try and achieve that by agreement. Unfortunately the Cricket Club has so far not moved things forward.

As to “penny pinching”, it is not the responsibility of the Council to spend public money repairing this privately owned wall. The Cricket Club is responsible for maintaining its property.
